Drive-by shooting in Haywood Road

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Some fear the possibility of obtaining a legal abortion could be going away. Ferris held an abortion town hall in Asheville on Thursday to discuss what things could look like in North Carolina with a conservative majority Supreme Court. Read more here
A drive-by shooting happened along Haywood Road on Saturday evening. Residents who were close to the incident were terrified upon hearing the gunshots. Witnesses have said that initially, they thought the noise came from fireworks. It turned out to be the drive-by shooting at the Haywood Quickstop. The owner has said that they have surveillance video and it is currently being reviewed. A pump at the gas station was hit and a bullet was recovered from the scene. There were multiple bullet holes and casings on the building as well. The APD commander has limited information as to the car involved in the shooting. No one was harmed and the station has added lighting to help deter crime from happening.

McCormick Field Home of the Asheville Tourists in Asheville, NC

McCormick Field is home to the Asheville Tourists. Anyone can purchase a ticket as it is an ADA compliant facility. It was built in 1924 and was named after Dr Lewis McCormick, who was then the city’s only bacteriologist. Dr McCormick was famous for starting a campaign to battle the houseflies that were plaguing residential homes. It was quite a rough start for the Tourists as they lost their team because of the Great Depression. In 1955, Asheville again lost a baseball team for 3 years because of financial problems and donations are mainly the reason they’re afloat. Everything changed for the better in 1980. Ron McKee became the General Manager of the Asheville Tourists and what he did first was to institute a family friendly environment. He held special attractions to attract people and it worked. The attendance increased by 50,000 on his first year and in 1986, it ballooned to more than 100,000. In 2010, DeWine Seeds-Silver Dollar Baseball bought the team and they continued making the environment a family friendly one. They currently bring in 180,000 baseball fans yearly.
